So, lest the order of my blog posts mislead you as to where these great symphonies belong in the timeline, here is a list of some selected symphonic works (starting with Haydn's Paris Symphonies), arranged in order of their year they were originally completed. Before the numbers following a composer's name please insert the words "Symphony (-ies) No." The tag (r) means "revised version." Likewise, (u) means "unfinished."

What a useful list, Robbie. The big shock - the 12 years between the Beethoven 9 and the Symphony Fantastique.
The Vaughan Williams 9 though seems adrift. I remember attending the second performance ever at the Cheltenham Festival on a school trip; that would have been 1958 as I was on to other things in '59.
And I've got to find out about this Onslow guy. I've got a tickle in the back of my brain that says I've encountered him before, but I don't think as a symphonist.
Neat blog - I must scan some more!
Thank you
Alan
Alan, thanks for pointing out my error on the VW9. I think I got some digits reversed, 1975 instead of 1957, or something like that. I have listened to Onslow's symphonies and I think they're quite good, but some people regard them as chamber music warmed over. I included them because there are so few symphonies worth listening to in that era. From the end of Haydn's career through much of Beethoven's there were, to be sure, active & popular composers such as Pleyel, etc., but their music is not particularly interesting.
