Parable of the Ring

To what shall I compare this generation?

It is like unto a man's hand, whose fingers were accustomed to go naked. One day the next-to-last finger decided to wear a ring. The thumb was so offended by this extravagance that it went and cut itself off. The hand, to be sure, was crippled; but what was the fate of the thumb?

Let him hear who has ears.

The interpretation of this parable: One must be struck by a sense of the absurd when one hears of a Lutheran suddenly bolting from his long-time home church because the pastor saw fit to chant a piece of liturgy that had customarily been spoken.
