Assignment 3

All right, how about a third round of "symphonies as great books"?

I promise to give you a little time - but not necessarily months and months like this last time - to check the following "bakers' dozen" out of the library, or order them from Arkiv Music, or buy them used, etc. They shouldn't be hard to find. The classics sections at Borders and Sam Goody probably carry them.
  1. Mozart's 25th Symphony in G minor
  2. Mozart's 38th Symphony in D major ("Prague")
  3. Haydn's 92nd Symphony in G major ("Oxford")
  4. Haydn's 96th Symphony in D major ("Miracle")
  5. Beethoven's 4th Symphony in B-flat major
  6. Beethoven's 8th Symphony in F major
  7. Schumann's 3rd Symphony in E-flat major ("Rhenish")
  8. Brahms' 4th Symphony in E minor
  9. Dvorak's 8th Symphony in G major
  10. Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony in E minor
  11. Bruckner's 4th Symphony in E-flat major ("Romantic")
  12. Mahler's 5th Symphony
  13. Shostakovich's 5th Symphony
Feel free to form your own first (or second, or third) impression of these musical masterpieces before reading my interpretation!
