This is the index of hymn tunes, identified by their titles, but listed in order of the poetic meter to which they hew. Like the similar indexes in my previous books, I've divided them up by the number of lines per stanza. I figured this would be helpful if you're looking for a tune to suit a stanza structure of given proportions. After that, they're alphabetized, if you will, in order of the number of syllables per line. Abbreviations for frequently used meters, such as LM, CPM and so forth, are explained in the text below. The usefulness of this type of index becomes apparent when you're choosing hymns for a church service and you like a hymn but its tune not so much; with luck, you can find another tune that will fit the same words. The 2-line "Irr." entries are actually chant tones for the psalms, hence the weird "hymn" numbers.

Bountiful Hymns: Tune Name Index
The following index, from the back of Bountiful Hymns, lists the hymn tunes and psalm chant tones by their titles and sort of doubles as a source/composer index. The version of this index in the actual book will reference the hymn numbers where the tunes are used. In the blog versions of my previous' books tune indexes, I've gone back and forth on whether it made any sense to include those numbes. The argument in favor of the Edifying Hymns approach, omitting the numbers, is that you'd really need to be holding the book in your hand for them to help you. But I think I'll side with Useful Hymns this time, just because deleting the hymn numbers would be a lot of tedious work.

Bountiful Hymns: Table of Contents
I'm only a few entries in the Scripture index away from being ready to proof out my third book of hymns, working title Bountiful Hymns. In anticipation of that great joy, here is the table of contents for it. The way this'll work, in the book, this list will be right up front. The titles, or topics, listed are in most cases not the first line of the hymn; for that, you'll want to check the back of the book for the First Line Index. Within the books, these titles/topics and sections appear at the top of the page with the hymn following below. Savvy? Good.

Pacey Packer: Unicorn Tracker
Pacey Packer: Unicorn Tracker
by J.C. Phillipps
Recommended Ages: 10+
Pacey is a full-of-herself little girl who fantasizes about being a hero. In real life, however, she doesn't have much time to play make-believe with her little sister, Mina. After being a little strict with her sister, she decides to relent and bring Mina a cookie – only to catch her jumping out an upstairs window on the back of a full-size, flesh-and-blood unicorn. When I say "catch," I actually mean "fail to catch," as her grip actually closes on the hoof of Mina's favorite toy, a plush unicorn with a heart-shaped blaze on its chest and the unlikely name of Slasher.
Until now, Pacey has never given a moment's thought to the idea that Slasher may actually be alive, as Mina has always claimed. Luckily, it is so, because Slasher becomes her guide through the land of the unicorns, where the landscape is full of such hazards as people-eating plants, deceptive creatures, deep gorges, and tiny tunnels you can only get through by shrinking yourself and tickling the tail of a turbo-powered slug. But the biggest danger lies ahead at the castle of the Unicorn King, Arkane, who has magic in his horn but evil in his heart.
Much of the book takes the form of Pacey and Slasher bickering and exchanging sarcastic quips. But even though Mina's invitation to Arkane's tea party has a sinister element in it, and Slasher's loyalty leaves something to be desired, girl and plushie grow as characters during their adventure together and pull off a rescue worthy of a unicorn and his girl.
I enjoyed this book's humor and the incongruous cuteness and snippiness of Slasher. I'd have liked it better, I think, if the art had featured more colors than grayscale and shades of purple. I have to be careful to limit my exposure to Slasher, or else I might become one of those people who has to buy the real-life plushie offered on the author's website.
This is the first in a series of four, let's call them graphic chapter books for young readers. Kind of like a comic book (no prose between illustrations), but in the same hardcover format as the Wimpy Kid books. The other installments, so far, include Horn Slayer, Mermaids vs. Unicorns and Dragon Rider. Author-illustrator Phillipps, who dedicated this book to her husband "who thought it was funny to tell people that I love unicorns," is also the author of three children's picture books, Wink, Monkey Ono and The Simples Love a Picnic.

Ben Braver and the Vortex of Doom
Ben Braver and the Vortex of Doom
by Marcus Emerson
Ages: 10+
If you're joining this trilogy late, like me, don't worry; you'll catch up quickly. Ben, surname Braver, is a middle-school-aged kid with no superpowers (just imagine), who for some reason is enrolled at a secret school for super-powered kids. The reason apparently has something to do with the late headmaster, Donald Kepler, being able to see the future and knowing that Ben is fated to save the school. Or maybe the world. But as this installment opens, Ben and his best friends are sitting in the back row of Headmaster Kepler's funeral, after the old fellow sacrificed his life – sort of – to save Ben from an explosion. Things immediately start going awry as, first off, the kid version of Kepler – Donnie to friends and family – crashes his own funeral, then a group of superkids-gone-bad show up demanding to have Donnie handed over to them so they can kill him. Or, you know, they'll destroy the school.
Ben and his buddies Penny and Noah are naturally swept up in things. Things such as a time-travel caper, an encounter with an alien that (in a different timeline) nearly wiped out the human race, and an opportunity to experience superpowers that quite literally goes to Ben's head. Like, in the form of a telepathic squid from Alpha Centauri. He takes superheroing lessons from a guy who does good without actually using his superpowers. He learns tough lessons on friendship and team work. He learns to drive a UFO. He helps fight a climactic battle in the middle of Times Square. And he becomes part of a larger team that includes a ghost, a goat (actually a person who changed into a goat but couldn't change back), and his own bully, who may not be so bad after all.
It's a hilarious, weird, thrilling tale that's about 2/3 narrative and 1/3 illustrations – but I had to be careful not to let my eyes slide too easily across the illustrations, because many of them actually carry the storyline forward with action and dialogue. At the climax, there are six full pages of illustration in a row that could almost have been a fold-out, full of movement and action, worth studying in detail. The characters, both in letters and in pictures, are drawn with quirky detail and with heart, making me laugh, cheer, shake my head at their mistakes and (in at least one scene) get a bit choked up. All around, it's a well-done piece of entertainment. So, while the embarrassing number of unread books in my apartment militates against seeking out more titles by this author, I'd definitely grab one if I happened across it at the bookstore.
Marcus Emerson is the author of many middle-grade-level hybrids of chapter books and graphic novels, for which I'm sure there must be a word but I haven't learned it yet. Other titles of his include 12 "6th Grade Ninja" books, two "Dodge Ball Wars" books, two "Recess Warriors" books, four "Secret Agent 6th Grader" books, nine "Kid Youtuber Books" and of course the "Ben Braver" trilogy, of which this is the third book. The first two are The Super Life of Ben Braver and Ben Braver and the Incredible Exploding Kid.

King of the Bench: Kicking and Screaming
King of the Bench: Kicking and Screaming
by Steve Moore
Recommended Ages: 10+
Spiro T. Agnew Middle School student Steve loves most sports, but mainly sits on the bench at games. Although he does have some good eye-hand skills, he suffers from what he calls eye-foot dweebitis. Which is probably why, one day while watching a soccer game, he blurts out the fact that he hates soccer. This offends his best friend, Becky, so badly that in order to make it up to her, he goes out for the soccer team and, naturally, ends up on the bench. But then, an unlikely series of events puts him in charge of defending the goal at a big game, bringing out unexpected qualities in the hero kids.
It's a hilarious, heavily illustrated kids' book, featuring the activities bus driver from aitch-ee-double-hockey-sticks, an obnoxious sports dad, an always-cheerful Brazilian junior soccer star and an unfortunate encounter with a skunk. It's the kind of underdog-team, put-upon kids comedy with scratchy that should appeal to fans of Wimpy Kids.
Despite his books being widely available, I haven't been able to find out much about this author. I guess he used to draw a cartoon column called "In the Bleachers." He's not to be confused with this Steve Moore, a comic book writer who died in 2014, or this Steven Moore who writes fantasy novels, or this Stephen Moore who also writes fantasy novels; but who knows? Steve Moore might not even be the author's (or authors') real name. I'm just here to review the book, not solve the mysteries of the ages. What I do know is that this is the third "King of the Bench" title, blending chapter books with graphic novels. The other titles in the series are No Fear, Control Freak and Comeback Kid.

Sanctified
Not to be confused with Atonement or TV's Justified, the movie I went to see last week is a western, shot in the Badlands of North Dakota, featuring an outlaw starting to question his robbery gang loyalties and a nun trying to deliver a solid-gold sacramental vessel to a convent in Williston. No big names are in it or behind the camera, but you wouldn't know the difference because the writing, acting, directing, cinematography and musical score are top notch. It's an intelligent tragedy with a good villain, complex characters, and (I learned) conscious allusions to other films as well as to Shakespeare and Christian theology – though it's not (you may be relieved to learn), I repeat not, a Christian apologetics movie. It's just a period tragedy that will challenge viewers to think back to their Sunday School studies and figure out which character is being sanctified throughout the movie. Parts of it will leave you emotionally wrecked.
As a bonus for the audience the night I went to see it, the theater owner had a Q&A after the film with its writer-director, Nickolaus Swedlund, and the actor who plays the heavy, Andrew Wheeler. Not counting that interesting opportunity – like a live, in-person DVD extra – here are the Three Scenes That Made It For Me: (1) Sister Hildegard (Tiffany Cornwell) tearfully tells ne'er-do-well Weston (Daniel Bielinski) that she'll "pray for him" after he insults her faith in the most brutally hurtful way. It was observed during the Q&A that "I'll pray for you" is a Christian's strongest insult, like a southern belle's "Bless your heart." (2) Anytime Shaw (Wheeler) starts giving his speech about how his daddy taught him (and he repaid the favor) that there's a way to insert the knife so that it isn't the wound that kills, but the removal of the blade. What a monster! (3) Weston has a final shoot-out with Shaw, and for a frozen moment, you don't know which of them has wounded the other. Wheeler himself described it as a moment from a samurai movie.
You may have to look hard for this movie, because it won't go into wide theatrical distribution, though I think it will stream online pretty soon and maybe go out on DVD. In theaters, I think it mostly played across North Dakota last year, and folks in my town are fortunate to have a local movie theater owned by a film school classmate of Swedlund. It's worth a look, though – an artistically powerful western film the likes of which are hard to make when star power is attached to it, proving that you don't need a star to have power.
