Tackiness Roundup

I don't want to let the neighborhood ELCA church tackiness of the week slip by unremarked! In a time of uncomfortably muggy St. Louis weather, their lighted sign proclaims:

IT'S NOT THE HEAT
IT'S THE HUMILITY
THAT COUNTS

Doesn't that just give you a chill? It's almost a welcome feeling in today's weather. But when you really think about it, it's all wet. I mean, real humility isn't exactly something you can try for. It's something that gets beaten into you by affliction and by the terror of God's Law. Sure, you can model yourself on the example of past and present paragons of humility. But how proud are you going to be of your humility when you find out that, in and of itself, it doesn't actually count? It doesn't count any more than anything else you might be proud of. In Christ, the proud are humbled and the humble are exalted. And in St. Louis in June, the heat & humidity aren't the only cause of that back-of-the-shirt, tacky feeling.
