As Independence Day weekend approaches, I can't help but notice this week's slogan from the neighborhood temple of lighted-sign tackiness, ELCA:
FREEDOM IS THE OXYGEN OF THE SOUL
Huh. I thought love was supposed to be like oxygen. But then, according to Sweet, half of the similitude is: "You get too much you get too high." So I guess it's not such a bad metaphor for "freedom" after all.
As for the 1970s glam-rock scene, the ELCA is so there. Typical of reductionist Lutherans who have let freedom go to their head, they live on the cutting edge of societal evolution... time-warped backward forty years.
